VfL Wolfsburg is a professional German football team that is based in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony and was founded in 1945. They currently compete in the Bundesliga, which is the top division in German football. Wolfsburg play their home games at the Volkswagen Arena, which has a capacity of 30,000, making it the 26th-biggest football stadium in Germany.
Whilst being best known for their football club, Wolfsburg also offers teams in badminton, athletics and handball. Wolfsburg had started off life as a small multi-sports club that was founded by Volkswagen workers and after they continued to grow they then became a professional side in 1945. VfL Wolfsburg is commonly referred to by their nickname ‘The Wolves’ which derives from their club name Wolfsburg.
Wolfsburg have won each of the two biggest major trophies in Germany in the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. They won the Bundesliga for the first and only time to date in the 2008/09 season, while they also finished as runners-up in the division in the 2014/15 campaign. In the latter season they also won the DFB-Pokal for the first time in the club’s history, beating Borussia Dortmund in the final. However, they finished 10 points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga to deny them the chance of winning a famous double. The club also reached the DFB-Pokal Final in 1995 but lost 3-0 to Borussia Mönchengladbach. They have also won the German Super Cup in 2015, beating Bayern Munich on penalties in the final.
Shortly after forming in 1945, Wolfsburg was close to folding with all their players leaving despite one, Josef Myer who remained at the club with Willi Hilbert to rebuild their side. After the Second World War, Wolfsburg competed in numerous amateur competitions but failed to pass the promotion playoffs until 1954 when they finally gained promotion into the Oberliga Nord. During the next five seasons, the Wolves narrowly missed out on relegation until 1959 where they finally suffered relegation. After the German leagues underwent a reformation in 1963, the same year the Bundesliga was formed, Wolfsburg now found themselves in the Regionalliga Nord. From the 1970s to the 1990s, Wolfsburg competed in the third tier of German football before gaining two consecutive promotions in 1991 and 1992 to see them feature in the 2.Bundesliga.
Wolfsburg came close to lifting their first DFB-Pokal trophy in 1994/95 when they progressed into the finals only to lose to Borussia Monchengladbach. The Wolves’ hard work would finally pay off in 1997 when they finished in 2nd place and gained promotion for the first time into the Bundesliga. Against the odds, Wolfsburg managed to avoid relegation from the top tier of German football and become a mid-table side for many years. In 2008/09, Wolfsburg won their first and only Bundesliga title to date after a strong season which saw them win ten games in succession. The German side would win their first DFB-Pokal in 2014/15 beating Borussia Dortmund in the final and in the following year would win the DFB-Supercup.
