Vitoria Sport Clube is a professional Portuguese football club based in Guimaraes. Commonly referred to as Vitoria de Guimaraes, the club currently competes in the Primeira Liga, which is the top division in the Portuguese football pyramid. The club has played in the top flight of Portugal for the vast majority of its history.
Vitoria de Guimaraes currently plays their home matches at the Estadio D. Afonso Henriques, which has a maximum capacity of 30,029. The stadium was originally built in 1965 and has been the club’s home ever since, but underwent significant renovation ahead of Portugal’s bid to host Euro 2004. The stadium hosted two matches at the tournament and has also played host to matches of the Portugal national football team on multiple occasions. It was formerly known as Estadio Municipal de Guimaraes.
As previously mentioned, Vitoria de Guimaraes have spent the vast majority of their history playing in the top division of the Portuguese football pyramid. Despite this, they have never won the Primeira Liga, which has been dominated by the big three of Benfica, Porto and Sporting CP over the years. Vitoria de Guimaraes have been promoted to the top flight four times in their history, although they have failed to win the league on any of these occasions. In total, the club has won just two trophies over the course of their history, with the most recent being the Taca de Portugal in the 2012/13 season. It was the sixth occasion that they had reached the final of the competition, having lost the previous five in a row but managed to overcome Benfica 2-1 to win the competition for the first time. In addition, Vitoria de Guimaraes won the 1988 Supertaca Candido de Oliveira by beating Porto in the final.
Vitoria de Guimaraes’ time playing in the top flight in Portugal has led to them qualifying for European competition on a number of occasions throughout their history. Although they have never played a season in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, they have competed in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, Intertoto Cup, UEFA Cup, European Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League. They did make it to the third qualifying round of the Champions League in 2008/09, but were knocked out by Swiss side Basel. Their highest-ever finish in the Primeira Liga is third, which they achieved most recently in the 2007/08 season. As well as their divisions within football, Vitoria de Guimaraes also has teams within basketball and volleyball.
