Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is a professional English football club based in the city of London. The club currently competes in the Premier League, which is the top division in the English football pyramid. Tottenham are one of a select number of clubs that have never been relegated from the Premier League since its inception in the 1992/93 season.

Tottenham currently plays their home matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which has been their home since it was opened in 2019. The stadium is regarded by many as the best in the Premier League with its state-of-the-art design and facilities. It replaced their former stadium White Hart Lane and was built on the same land as their previous home. The Tottenham Hotspur stadium has a maximum capacity of 62,850.

Tottenham shares a bitter rivalry with North London rivals Arsenal, who also compete in the Premier League, as well as having rivalries with Chelsea and West Ham.

Tottenham Honours

Tottenham are two-time winners of the old First Division, having won both titles in the 20th century. Their first title came in the 1950/51 campaign, as they finished four points ahead of Manchester United to be crowned champions of England for the first time. Spurs did so again 10 years later, winning the 1960/61 First Division title in what was the most memorable season in the club’s history. In this campaign Tottenham also won the FA Cup, becoming the first-ever team to win the First Division and FA Cup double in English football.

They were known as something of a cup team through the years and proudly boast eight FA Cup victories, won in 1900/01, 1920/21, 1960/61, 1961/62, 1966/67, 1980/81, 1981/82 and 1990/91. That point is further boosted by their four League Cup successes in 1970/71, 1972/73, 1998/99 and 2007/08. In addition, Spurs have won the Second Division twice and the Community Shield seven times in their history.

Tottenham have also had success in European competitions over the years. Their first European trophy came in 1962/63 when they won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, beating Atletico Madrid in the final. They have also won the UEFA Cup twice, coming in 1972 and 1984 when they beat Wolves and Anderlecht, respectively, in the finals.

Tottenham History

Tottenham Hotspur was founded on 5 September 1882, but weren’t members of an official league until joining the Southern League in 1896. They became a Football League club in 1908 and immediately won promotion to the First Division at the first time of asking. Spurs spent time in both the First and Second Divisions from there on out until becoming regulars in the top flight from 1951/52 onwards.

As previously mentioned, the 1960/61 season is the most celebrated in Tottenham’s history as it saw them become the first English club to win the First Division and FA Cup double. The team was managed by the legendary Bill Nicholson and featured club icons such as Danny Blanchflower, Dave Mackay, Les Allen and Bobby Smith. The following season, the club signed striker Jimmy Greaves from AC Milan, who went on to become one of the club’s greatest-ever players.

Tottenham are still yet to win the league since that double-winning campaign, having seen silverware come only from cup competitions in the time that has followed. Spurs have boasted some exceptional talents since including Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker, Ledley King, Dimitar Berbatov, Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, to name a few, while the strike force of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son has been a fan favourite in the modern era. Kane has enjoyed a prolific career at Tottenham that has seen him surpass the aforementioned Greaves as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.
