Real Sociedad de Futbol, S.A.D, or as they are most commonly known, Real Sociedad, is a professional Spanish football club based in San Sebastian. Part of the Basque Country, Real Sociedad currently compete in La Liga, which is the top division of Spanish football. The club have played the vast majority of their football in the top flight and have never dropped below the second tier in their history.
The club was founded on September 7, 1909 and they currently play their home matches at the Anoeta Stadium, which is also known as the Reale Arena for sponsorship purposes. It holds a maximum capacity of 39,313, making it the 11th-largest stadium in Spain and the second largest in the Basque Country.
Real Sociedad is nicknamed Los Txuri-Urdin, which directly translates to the White and Blues due to their recognisable blue and white home jerseys.
Real Sociedad are one of just nine teams to have ever won La Liga and one of only six teams to have won it more than once in their history. They did so in back-to-back seasons during the golden age of the club’s history, winning the La Liga title in the 1980/81 and 1981/82 seasons. Both title victories came in the era where only two points were awarded for a victory in La Liga and the mastermind behind their success was Alberto Ormaetxea, who there is a statue of outside the Anoeta Stadium to this day. In addition to their two league titles, Real Sociedad also have three Segunda Division titles to their name having won promotion as champions in the 1948/49, 1966/67 and 2009/10 seasons.
They have also enjoyed success in the Copa del Rey with three different successes in Spain’s top cup competition. They won the competition in 1909, 1987 and 2020, famously beating their Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao in the final of the latter. In addition, they have one Spanish Super Cup to their name, won in 1982, as well as six Gipuzkoa Championships that were all won prior to the Second World War.
Real Sociedad have a proud record of only spending three seasons outside of the top flight since the 1949/50 season, being an almost ever-present in La Liga during that time.
Real Sociedad have had plenty of flurries in European competition through the years, including four appearances in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League. Those appearances came in the 1981/82, 1982/83, 2003/04 and 2013/14 seasons. By far the most successful run came in the 1982/83 campaign as they made it all the way to the semi-finals, defeating Celtic and Sporting Lisbon before facing Hamburg in the final four, narrowly losing 3-2 on aggregate.
In their most recent Champions League appearance they failed to make it out of the group stage, but have become regulars in the Europa League in recent years, albeit they have had some trouble navigating the first knockout round.
Alberto Gorriz is the all-time leading appearance maker for Real Sociedad having made a mammoth 599 appearances for the club. He is closely followed by Juan Antonio Larranaga and Jesus Maria Zamore, who are each on 589 and 588 appearances respectively. When it comes to top goalscorers, Jesús María Satrústegui is top of the pile with 162, with the top three being rounded off with Roberto Lopez Ufarte (129) and Cholin (127).
