Paris Saint-Germain Football Club is a professional French football club based in the capacity city of Paris. Commonly referred to as PSG, the club currently competes in Ligue 1, which is the top division of French football and have done so for most of their history. PSG was founded in 1970, making them still a relatively new force in comparison with many other top European clubs.
The club currently plays their home matches at the Parc des Princes, which has a maximum capacity of 47,929. It has been PSG’s home since 1974 and is the fifth-largest football stadium in France.
The club was purchased by Qatar Sports Investment (QSI) in 2011, making them one of the richest clubs in the world in the process and have gone on to dominate French football in the time since.
Despite only being established in 1970, PSG are rapidly closing in on the record for most Ligue 1 titles in their history. Currently, they are level with Marseille and Saint-Etienne all-time on 10 titles each, although they had won just two titles prior to the QSI investment, coming in the 1985/86 and 1993/94 seasons. Periods of domination have followed, including a run of four consecutive Ligue 1 titles between 2013 and 2016, as well as another three in a row between 2018 and 2020. Outside of Ligue 1, PSG also won Ligue 2 in their first history in existence in 1970/71.
Domestic trophies have brought plenty of success for the club, who have won the Coupe de France 14 times in their history. In addition, they have also won the Coupe de la Ligue nine times, as well as 11 Trophee des Champions for good measure. In Europe, PSG were crowned champions of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1995/96 and also won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2001. However, the Champions League has, to date, escaped their grasp. PSG reached the final of the competition in 2020 but were defeated 1-0 by Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the final.
PSG were only founded in 1970, but have quickly become a significant force in French football. They have been a Ligue 1 side for all but three seasons in their history, while they have consistently pulled in some of the largest attendances in French football each season. Havign suffered a period of decline during the mid-to-late 2000s, PSG emerged as one of the most dangerous clubs in Europe following the investment from their Qatari owners.
That investment has seen them sign some of the biggest names in world football in the time since, including Lionel Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Edinson Cavani, Angel di Maria, David Beckham and Achraf Hakimi, to name just a few. Two current players lead the way in terms of all-time appearances for the club in Marco Verratti and Marquinhos, who are followed by the retired Sylvain Armand. In terms of all-time leading goalscorers, the top five is a star-studded list featuring Mbappe, Cavani, Ibrahimovic, Neymar and Pauleta.
