The Primeira Liga is the top football league in Portugal. It was been predominantly dominated by three teams since its inception in 1934 — Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting CP — who have won all but two of the Primeira Liga titles between them in the history of the league. It is one of the top leagues in European football featuring some of the biggest clubs on the continent. The Primeira Liga has also become a breeding ground for producing some of the world's most talented players.
The Primeira Liga is the top division in the Portuguese football pyramid. In total, 18 teams compete in the Primeira Liga each season, with the winner being decided by who is able to accumulate the most points over the course of the 34-game season. The 34 games see each team face each other twice over the course of the year, once at home and once away each. As is the case in other top European leagues such as the Premier League and La Liga, teams are awarded three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for a defeat.
The remaining places in the league are also decided by the number of points earned over the course of the season and there are other incentives for teams who perform well. Currently the top three teams in the league table qualify for the following season’s Champions League, with the top two entering at the group stage while third goes in at the third qualifying round. The team that finishes the season in fourth will enter the group stage of the Europa League, while fifth and sixth qualify for the Europa Conference League.
At the opposite end of the table, each of the bottom two teams will be relegated to Liga Portugal 2, which is the second tier of Portuguese football. These will then be replaced by the two teams that finished in the top two positions of Liga Portugal 2 in the following year’s Primeira Liga. Meanwhile, the team that finishes 16th in the table will contest the Primeira Liga promotion/relegation play-offs against the team that finished third in that year’s Liga Portugal 2. The play-offs are contested over two legs, with the first leg being at the ground of the second tier team before the Primeira Liga side have home advantage in the second leg. The aggregate winner will earn the right to compete in the Primeira Liga in the following season.
