Football Club de Nantes is a French professional football club based in Nantes, Pays de la Loire. Often referred to simply as Nantes, the club currently competes in Ligue 1, which is the top division in French football. Historically, they have been one of the most successful clubs in French football.
Nantes currently plays their home matches at the Stade de la Beaujoire, which has a maximum capacity of 35,322. It has been the club’s home since to opened in May 1984, replacing their old home Stade Marcel Saupin which they had played in from 1937 to 1984.
Nantes have a famous youth academy that has produced stars such as Didier Deschamps, Claude Makélélé, Marcel Desailly and Christian Kerembeu over the years.
Nantes have a proud history behind them that has seen them win each of the biggest trophies that French football has to offer. Without doubt their proudest achievement comes in the fact they have won the Ligue 1 title eight times in their history, with the first two coming in back-to-back seasons in 1964/65 and 1965/66. The club has also won the league in the 1972/73, 1976/77, 1979/80, 1982/83 and 1994/95 campaigns. Their most recent title victory came in the 2000/01 season when they edged out Lyon and Lille in a hard-fought title battle that they won despite losing eight matches in the league. The victory also guaranteed them qualification for the Champions League group stage.
Nantes have also won all of the major cup competitions in France, being four-time winners of the Coupe de France in their history. They first did so in 1978/79 when they beat Auxerre in the final, before winning it in successive seasons in 1999 and 2000. The club then won it for a fourth time when they defeated Nice in the 2022 Coupe de France final. They also wn the Coupe de la Ligue in 1965 and are also three-time winners in the Trophy des Champions. Despite all of this success, the club has never won a major European trophy in their history.
After World War II, Nantes, originally composed of five local clubs, started playing professional sports in 1945. With a 2-0 victory over CA Paris in their first-ever game, Nantes finished sixth in the inaugural campaign.
The team gained promotion to the top level in 1963, and in 1965, 1966, 1973, 1977, and 1980 they won the Championship. Their performance declined in the latter half of the 1980s, which led to their relegation. They were given a new name—FC Nantes Atlantique—and returned to the top division in 1992. Things got better, and in 1995 the team won the championship. They won the Coupe de France in 1999 and 2000, and Nantes won Ligue 1 in 2001.
Since being acquired by Groupe Dassault in 2004, Nantes’ performance deteriorated, and in 2007 they were relegated to Ligue 2. Since 1963, they had never played in the second division. The present name FC Nantes was awarded to FC Nantes Atlantique in 2007. The team came back to Ligue 1 in 2013.
