Leicester racecourse is in Oadby, Leicestershire and host both flat and national hunt meetings throughout the year. The course opened in 1883, is an oval-shaped track and is now owned by the Leicester Racecourse Company Ltd.

Notable Races

In the late nineteenth century, it is fair to say that Leicester was more of a premier track that it is considered today. That is because it was at this point in history that it hosted the Prince Of Wales Stakes and the Portland Stakes. Both of these races are Group 1 races which carried money larger than the five British racing classics in 1889.

Sadly such iconic races are no longer held at the iconic track with the most notable race now being the King Richard III Stakes, a Listed race held over 7f.

Flockton Grey Ringer Case

In recent times Leicester racecourse is possibly best down for the Flockton Grey Ringer Case. Back on March 29 1982, Flockton Grey who was owned by Ken Richardson and trained by Stephen Wiles was a two-year-old scheduled to make his debut in a race for that age. Priced at 10-1 from an unsuccessful yard, defeat looked relatively likely. However, Richardson and Wiles replaced the horse with a three-year-old, Good Hand. With the horse no carrying the additional 47 pound it ought to as a three-year-old it romped home by 20 lengths with the jockey unaware of any under-hand activity.

Unfortunately for the connections, the margin of victory flagged up suspicion. A police investigation followed and when evidence such as the fact that the horse had teeth far too developed for a two-year-old the case went to court. Both Wyles and Richardson were convicted.

Sadly for the horse Flockton Grey, he was actually kept in custody as part of the investigation and never released until 1986. He never contested a race and went on to live to the age of 28.

Conclusion

With Leicester Races being both a national hunt and flat racecourse there are opportunities to bet there throughout the year. Why not take advantage of some Leicester Free Bets and open an online account today where you can get some great offers on horse race betting.
