Eintracht Frankfurt is a German Football Club that was founded in 1899. Eintracht Frankfurt originated from two separate football clubs that were named Frankfurter Fußball-Club Viktoria and Frankfurter Fußball-Club Kickers. The two sides merged and became Frankfurter Fußball Verein, before being renamed Eintracht Frankfurt in 1920.
Eintracht Frankfurt currently play their home games at the Commerzbank-Arena, which has a capacity of 51,500, making it the 10th-largest football stadium in Germany. Eintracht Frankfurt is commonly referred to by their nickname ‘The Eagles’ which originated from their club/badge.
Eintracht Frankfurt have a number of honours to their name throughout history, including one German Championship title. However, they are yet to win the title during the Bundesliga era, as they look to top their best-ever finish of third place in the competition. The Eagles have won the DFB-Pokal on five separate occasions, doing so in 1974, 1975, 1981, 1988 and 2018, while they have also finished as runners-up a further three times. The club have suffered relegations to the 2.Bundesliga, leading to them winning the 1997/98 2.Bundesliga title. They have twice finished as runners-up in the German Super Cup.
Eintracht Frankfurt also have pedigree in European competition, having won the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League twice in their history. The Europa League success in 2022 was their most recent trophy win, as they defeated Rangers in the final in Seville. Frankfurt also won the Intertoto Cup in 1967, while they have also finished as runners-up in the Champions League Final and UEFA Super Cup.
Before joining the Gauliga in 1933, Eintracht Frankfurt competed in the Kreisliga Nordmain, Bezirksliga Main and the Bezirksliga Main-Hessen which were all considered the highest association football league at the current time in the Prussian province. During their time in these leagues, Frankfurt won seven titles. The Eagles won their first Gauliga title in 1937/38 and remained in this division until the Oberliga Sud was formed after the Second World War in 1945/46. Frankfurt spent 18 seasons in the Oberliga Sud and during this time they won two titles (1952/53, 1958/59). During their 1958/59 title-winning season, Frankfurt won their first Southern German Football Championship. Eintracht’s success domestically saw them enter the European Cup in 1959/60 which they finished as runners-up in, losing to Real Madrid. The German side came close to lifting the DFB-Pokal for the first time in 1962/63 reaching the semi-finals and came even closer the following year, as they reached the finals.
Eintracht Frankfurt was one of the founding members of the Bundesliga when it was formed in 1963/64 and in the first season finished in 3rd place, which is the closest they have come to winning the title to this current day. Despite their lack of success in the Bundesliga, Eintracht Frankfurt won back-to-back DFB-Pokals from 1973 to 1975 and would go onto win another DFB-Pokal in 1980/81. Frankfurt won the UEFA Cup Final in 1979/80, beating Borussia Monchengladbach. From 1963 to 2019, Eintracht Frankfurt spent the majority of their time in the Bundesliga apart from a couple of brief spells in the 2.Bundesliga.
