How Does the Champions League Work?

The group stage draw follows these rules. There are 4 groups with 8 teams in each group. 32 teams qualify for the Champions League group stage from the UEFA Champions League.

8 teams from the Champions League group stage go on to the next Champions League round called “The Knock Out Stage”. The 32 teams are divided into four groups of eight, and each team in a group plays every other team once. Champions League is held over two rounds of matches: the “Group Stage” and “Knockout stage”.

How Does The Champions League Draw Work?

The teams’ UEFA club coefficients determine the UEFA Champions League group stage draw. Teams entered in the first pot are considered the best (and therefore seeded) while those in the fourth pot are the weakest. In the draw for each round, a team is drawn from each pot so that all groups contain one team from each pot.

The draw pots are arranged following a team’s coefficient ranking – a ranking based on a formula weighing achievements in the five previous seasons.

  • Pot 1 – is for the highest seeded teams. It has the Champions League and Europa League winners, along with champions of the top six leagues.
  • Pot 2 – is for eight teams that have the highest club coefficient.
  • Pot 3 – is also for eight teams with the highest club coefficient.
  • Pot 4 – has the last remaining eight teams.

Certain teams and leagues dominate the competition, so they tend to have more teams from those leagues and a higher ranking. Typically teams from the English Premier League, the Spanish La Liga, the German Bundesliga and the Italian Serie A contain the highest-ranked teams.

The groups or mini-leagues consist of four teams are labelled between Group A and Group H. Each mini-league will contain one team from each pot.

The Champions League group stage comprises eight groups of four, and each team plays three matches against the other three sides in their pool. There are three points awarded for a win, with one point given for a draw. The top two teams from each group move on to the last sixteen. At that stage, there will be a seeded knockout round draw for the remaining eight teams.
