Bristol City Honours

Bristol City has never won the First Division title in their history, but they have won the Second Division title. This came in the 1905/06 season when they finished four points ahead of Manchester United, who were promoted as runners-up. This was only one of two times that they had been promoted to the top flight of English football, with the other coming in the 1975/76 season as they were one of three teams to go up alongside Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion.

They are also four-time winners of the old Third Division/League One title, having come top of the league in the 1922/23, 1926/27, 1954/55 and 2014/15 seasons. The club have also gone up as runners-up in the division a further four times. In 1897/98, Bristol City were champions of the Western Football League. Their haul of trophies is complete with three Football League Trophies, one Welsh Cup and one Anglo-Scottish Cup.

Bristol City History

Bristol City was founded in 1894 as Bristol South End, but changed their name to Bristol City three years later. In 1900, Bristol City merged with Southern League rivals Bedminster, before then joining the Football League in 1901. Arguably the best spell in the club’s history came between 1905-1909. They were promoted to the First Division for the first time in the 1905/06 season when they won the Second Division title, before finishing as runners-up to Newcastle United in the First Division the following year. Bristol City then made it to the FA Cup final in 1909, but lost 1-0 to Manchester United at Crystal Palace.

The Robins were then relegated at the end of the 1910/11 season, after which they have enjoyed just one more spell in the top flight. This came between the 1976/77 to 1979/80 seasons, with the latter campaign being the first of three successive relegations that saw them become a Fourth Division team by 1982/83. In the 21st century, Bristol City has floated between the Championship and League One. Their most recent promotion from League One came in the 2014/15 season when they have crowned champions of the third tier of English football, winning promotion alongside Milton Keynes Dons and Preston North End. To date, they are still yet to play in the Premier League since the breakaway of the top flight from the Football League.
