Barcelona Honours

There are few more successful clubs in football than Barcelona, who alongside Real Madrid, have dominated Spanish football throughout the years. At the time of writing, Barcelona have 26 La Liga titles to their name, as well as 31 Copa Del Reys — the latter being a record number of victories in that particular competition. They can also throw 13 Spanish Super Cups into the mix.

In European football, Barcelona have a rich history with five UEFA Champions League titles. Barca also have four UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups, five UEFA Super Cups, three Inter-Cities Fairs Cups and two Latin Cups. Barcelona also have three FIFA Club World Cup victories.

The battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona to be the most successful club in Spain is one that changes by the season. At the time of writing, Real Madrid are top of the list with 99 trophies to Barcelona’s 97, with Athletic Bilbao, Atletico Madrid and Valencia being someway behind the top two.

Barcelona Icons

In being one of the biggest clubs in the world, Barcelona have had some of the greatest players of all time don their famous shirt. Unarguably the most famous of all is Lionel Messi, who is the all-time leading goalscorer and appearance maker for the Catalan club. The Argentinian forward is considered by many to be the greatest player of all-time and finished his Barcelona career with 672 goals in 778 games. He played in a special team, led by Pep Guardiola, that featured the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Carlos Puyol, Gerard Pique and Dani Alves.

That is barely scratching the surface when it comes to Barcelona heroes through the years. Amongst the greatest players of all-time to have played for the club are Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Neymar, Romario, Thierry Henry and more. When it comes to putting together an all-time starting XI, there are few teams that can compete with the star power of Barcelona’s alumni.

Barcelona-Real Madrid Rivalry

It’s impossible to mention Barcelona without thinking of their intense rivalry with Real Madrid. The rivalry stems deeper than football, going back all the way to political tensions between Catalonia and Castile. On the pitch, it remains one of the most-viewed fixtures in European football each season and the two clubs have been extremely well-matched throughout the years. A handful of players have turned out for both clubs during their playing careers, the most notable being Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Samuel Eto’o, Luis Enrique, Michael Laudrup, Bernd Schuster and Gheorghe Hagi.
