History of Wimbledon
Wimbledon (Wimbledon Championships) is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. It was first held way back in 1877 and has remained in its current venue the All England Club since that date. It is the only Grand Slam still held on the original grass surface, with the others now being played on hard/clay courts.
Wimbledon is the third of the four Grand Slam tournaments over the tennis season, taking place over a two week period at the end of June and beginning of July.

Competitions during the tournament
There are five major events contested during Wimbledon as well as four junior events. The five major events are: the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, as well as mixed doubles.
The junior level has the same structure as the senior events, but without the mixed doubles.

Previous women’s singles winners
Similar to the men’s title, the woman’s Wimbledon title has been dominated through the naughties. This time by the Williams sisters Serena and Venus. Between them they have won the title nine times between 2000 and 2010, with there only been one year (2006) when neither was in the final.

Popular Wimbledon players in recent times
The most popular Wimbledon player over the last ten years has been without doubt Roger Federer who has dominated the competition. Rafael Nadal is another popular player and is showing his potential as a world class successor now Rodger Federer is nearing 30.
