History of the Austrailan Open

The Austrailan Open is held in January each year and is the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments. It began in 1905 on grass courts, but since 1987 it has been held on hard courts. The tournament is currently held at Melbourne Park.

When it began, the trounament was first named the Australasian Championships. In 1927 the name was changed and it became the Australian Championships. A final name changed occurred in 1969 when the name changed to the current “Australian Open”.

Competitions

Following the theme of all the other Grand Slam tournaments, the Austrailan Open has men’s and womens singles as the main event. Following this, it has men’s, womens and mixed doubles. Then junior, wheelchair and legends competitions.

Previous men’s singles winners

The first men’s champion was Rodney Heath in 1905, back when it was named the Australasian Championships. Since then the tournament has been won by a large number of different players. The winners between 2000 and 2010 are listed below.

Popular players in recent times

Of course the most popular men’s player recently has been Roger Federer. He has dominated the tennis scene for a while now and has won everything going. Because of this, odds on him are usually low, so if you want to bet on him you will have to place a lot of money to get a good return. Other famous men’s players include Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic

Throughout the naughtys the womans game has been dominated by the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus. Of the two Serena remains the most successful. Few others can boast of the form that the Williams sisters, but other popular players include Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic and Dinara Safina.

Austrailan Open betting

Being the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Austrailan Open attracts a lot of bets. People who bet on the Austrailan Open know that player’s form at the beginning of the year can more random, so they can get better odds before the tournament begins. Once the players start playing the odds will change to match their current form and potential. It is difficult to predict who will win the tournament each year so the odds are usually high, and this makes bets on the Austrailan Open and tennis in general good if you know what to look for.

Popular Austrailan Open bets

Overall men’s/women’s singles winner.

Bets on “big name” players.

Bets on sets and points in individual matches.

To reach the final.

England are going to the World Cup!

So the World Cup seeding has taken place and many people couldn’t be happier with the draw. England have been placed in group C along with the United States, Algeria and Slovenia. The US, probably being the most difficult game is first, which will give England a chance to recover if there are any slip-ups.

The winner of England’s group (hopefully them), will play the runner-up of group D which is likely to be one of Serbia, Ghana or Australia, with Germany expected to be winners of group D.

There are going to be lots of England World Cup bets available and we will list them all here.

The first is from SkyBet

All you have to do is place an outright bet on any of England’s rivals to win the World Cup and you will automatically be entered into Sky Bet’s World Cup Money Back Guarantee.
This article explains about the major tennis tournaments for men and women and some of the bets you can make on them.

About tennis

Tennis betting is popular throughout the year, with tournaments taking place in nearly every month. Unlike many other sports, tennis is watched more equally by men and women. This is most likely due to there being strong presence of both men and women in the game.

Tennis originated in the UK in the 1800s and since then it has spread all across the world. Like the football World Cup, some of the major tennis tournaments attract a lot of people who don’t usually watch the sport. These include Wimbledon, the US Open, French Open and Australian Open. During these important tournaments bookmakers take a lot of bets on tennis matches. A lot of these bets on tennis are from people who don’t usually watch the game.

William Hill

William Hill is great for tennis betting. They take many tennis bets every year and like to reward their new customers with a £25 free bet.

Best tennis players

There are many great tennis players out there at the moment. These include Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick. Top women players include Serena and Venus Williams, Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova.

Tennis Tournaments

Men’s and Women’s tennis is run by two different organisations. For the men, the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) oversees most of their events. For the women, the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) organises most of their events.

ATP Tour

The ATP tour spans the whole calendar year. The most famous events are the Grand Slam tournaments already mentioned (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open). These are considered the most prestigious tournaments in tennis. These attract most viewers, the biggest prizes and of course, the biggest bets.

The main competition after the grand slams is the ATP World Tour Masters 1000. This is a group of 9 tournaments in which top male tennis players compete in every year. 1000 ranking points is available for the winner of each tournament. After the masters 1000 there are several lower tier events including the ATP World Tour 500 series, ATP World Tour 250 series and ATP Challenger Tour. Each of these competitions allows contestants to earn ATP ranking points for a possibility to move into the next tier.

At the end of each year ATP World Tour Finals are held in which the top 8 players in the world rankings compete for the title.

WTA Tour

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) organises the WTA Tour, which has been branded the The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour since 2005. As with the men’s tour, the 4 grand slams are the most important events and attract a lot of attention. After these the Premier tournaments are the main competitions. Some of them overlap with the men’s competitions and take place in the same location as with the grand slams.

At the end of the year the Sony Ericsson Championships take place. This is the women’s version of the men’s ATP World Tour Final. The top ranked female players on the WTA Tour battle it out for the title.

International Tennis Competitions

Two other major tennis events are the Davis and Fed cups. These are run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and are separate from the Tours because they are International team competitions. The Davis Cup is the biggest men’s international team competition and is actually the biggest annual team competition in sport! Teams of players from different countries play each other in a knock-out tournament. The women’s equivalent is the Fed Cup and takes place in a similar format to the men’s tournament.

Popular tennis bets

The most popular short term bet on tennis is the match bet. This is basically betting on which player will win. The next most popular thing to bet on is the sets. You can bet on a player to win a particular set or even go as far as predicting how many sets a player will win. You obviously get better odds for the latter as it is more difficult to predict.

Also popular are longer term bets on tennis tournaments. Here people bet on who they think will win the tournament up to several months in advance. You can get better odds doing it this way as the player’s form usually changes throughout the year and it is always hard to predict who will win.

Champions League qualification

The structure of the Champions League has changed many times, but currently there two or three different rounds depending on where the team finishes in their domestic league. The rounds consist of

Depending on the strength of a countries domestic league, they will have 1 to 4 positions available for Champions League entry. Usually the last available place in not automatic qualification and the team has to enter a qualifying round. The stage in which a team enters the qualifying round is again determined how strong their domestic league is, and there can be up to 4 rounds.

Champions League tournament structure

After the extra qualifying round the teams that qualify are added to the automatically qualifying teams and drawn into 8 group stages consisting of 32 teams. In the group stage each team plays each other home and away and the top 2 in each group progress to the last 16 knockout stage. The team that ends up 3rd in their group is dropped into the Europa League.

In the last 16, the runner up of one group will be paired with the winner of another group. Each match in the knockout stage is also two-legged, being played at home and away, with exception of the final which is a single match played at a neutral venue. Before the final the last 16 progress to the quarter-finals (last 8), and semi-finals (last 4), before the remaining two teams meet for the final at the end of May.

Champions League betting

If you would like to place some champions league bets, you can find a full list of free bets here. Betting on the Champions League is very popular and it attracts bettors from all over the world, not just from Europe. Over the last few years English teams have been dominant throughout the tournament and a lot of people have bet on these teams to do well. Bets on the Champions League group stages can be popular as there can often be some upsets in the games that take place early on in the tournament. However once the tournament reaches the knockout stages there is usually an increase in bets as the tournament progresses and the matches get more important.

Information on horse betting. A sport that exists solely for betting.

Horse racing and betting

Horse racing is a very unique sport made by the fact that it only exists because of betting. Horse racing betting is probably the second most popular bet on sport in the world after football betting. Betting on horses is enjoyed by young and old, and many bookmakers in the UK were founded becuase of horse betting.

Horse racing has been around for thousands of years. The Romans used to race chariots about two thousand years ago, but it wasn’t until 1174 in Britain that the first race meeting took place. It took until the 17th and 18th centuries until the thoroughbreds that we see today were introduced.

Totesport

Totesport is one of the top horse racing betting sites on the net. They are also great for other sports as well. Plus you get £100 in free bets when you join!

Visit their site now!

Types of horse racing

The most popular type of horse racing is thoroughbred racing which is sometimes known as “The Sport of Kings”. It is done over moderate distances at very fast paces either on the flat or over jumps.

Standardbred horse racing is more popular in the Eastern US. These type of horses have the ability to race pulling a small cart rather than a saddled jockey as in thoroughbred racing.

US horse racing

In the US flat thoroughbred racing is the most popular form of horse racing. A ban on bookmakers being involved in horse betting at the beginning of the 1900s almost wiped out the sport. However in 1908 parimutuel betting was introduced and this got the sport back on track. The most famous race in the US calendar is the Breeders Cup held at Belmont Park.

European horse racing

Horse racing is very popular in Europe, with Britain, Ireland and France being the top countries for the sport. It is no surprise that horse betting on races in these countries is so popular.

In Britain and Ireland, National Hunt racing is the most common type, where horses jump fences rather than racing on flat. National Hunt racing is sometimes referred to as a steeplechase, the most famous being The Grand National.

Newmarket is considered as the home of horse racing where James I spent a lot of time in the 1600s. In the 1700s Queen Anne kept a number of horses which led to the formation of the Royal Ascot, a very famous race meeting. The capital of National hunt racing in Britain is now Cheltenham Racecourse. There every year they hold Cheltenham Festival. Ireland is considered a major contributor to horse racing and every year their horses dominate the Cheltenham Festival.

France currently hold the richest race in Europe, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp Racecourse. It has prize money of 4 million Euros.

Betting on horses

There are two types of horse racing bet that you can make: Either parimutuel betting (like Tote betting), or fixed odds betting on the current market odds.

In Parimutuel you don’t know the final payout until the “pool” of bets is closed, whereas in fixed odds betting you agree on the odds when you make the bet. In primutuel betting you are wagering against other bettors and the “house” takes a commission from the pool.

In the UK tax on betting was abolished in 2001 and now punters can enjoy tax free betting.

Types of horse racing bets

The most popular type of horse racing bet is bet to win, where the punter bets for the horse to win the race. The second most popular type of bet on horse racing is the bet to place, where you will win if the horse you select comes either first or second (US) or a number of places set before the race (UK). Obviously as you are backing more horses in the second option, the odds are going to be less than if you bet on a horse to win.

Bet to show is another option to bet on, however this is more common in the US. Bet to show will pay out if the horse comes first, second or third.

A common term you may hear in horse betting is the each way bet or E/W bet. In the UK an each way bet means the stake is split with half being placed on the horse to win and the rest being placed on a certain place criteria. On some races the each way bet will cover place criteria up to the first 5 places. However in this case the odds you will get if your horse comes in 2nd to 5th are a lot lower than if it comes first.

Exchanges

The introduction of online betting exchanges in the last few years has increased the options for horse racing betting. Punters wanting to place a horse racing bet can now bet against other bettors using the back and lay options offered on the exchange platforms.

This article is all about football betting. If you would like to know more, please read on.

Football is by far the most watched, played and bet on sport in the world. Countries rich and poor enjoy the sport due to it’s simplicity, excitement and ease of play. It doesn’t require any specialist equipment like other sports, just a football and a few friends. Football has produced some big stars over its history and given some gifted people an opportunity that changed their lives forever.

Although the biggest leagues and matches usually take place on the weekend, football betting takes place on a daily basis. Bookmakers take football bets on big and small teams all year round.

Leagues

There many football leagues all over the world, however the biggest are in Europe. The biggest of all is the English Premier League which many people enjoy betting on every weekend. Other notable leagues are the Spanish Primera Division (La Liga) and Serie A of Italy. These are all domestic leagues.

Football betting on cup competitions is also massively popular. These can be split into club level and national. The most popular club level cup is the Champions League. Here the best teams and players battle it out to claim the title of the best in Europe. The Champions League takes a lot of football bets and it can be very profitable for some people.

The second level club cup competition in Europe is the Europa League (newly re-branded in 2009), in which the next best teams in leagues all over Europe compete similar to the Champions League.

The biggest cup competition of all is a national one, the World Cup. This is the most popular football event on earth, reaching to every country in the world. The amount of football bets on the World Cup are huge. Because of the size of the event people who don’t usually bet on football are often tempted to place bets on the World Cup. It even attracts people who don’t usually watch football.

Matches

Every year there are big football matches that attract a lot of bets. People who place bets on football often like to bet on these exciting matches often referred to as derbies. Derbies originally meant a rivalry between two local teams, but the term is now often used also when two big teams have a lot of history and rivalry play each other. Some of the big derbies are Rangers vs. Celtic, Barcelona vs. Real Madrid, Manchester United vs. Liverpool, Boca Juniors vs. River Plate and Brazil vs. Argentina.

Types of football betting

Most people who bet on football will bet with fixed odds. e.g. 15/4 (fractional odds) or 4.75 to 1 (decimal odds). Fixed odds betting is the most popular because it is the easiest to understand. However there is also another popular type of betting that is gaining popularity. This is known as spread betting. Spread betting works rather like stock trading where you bet a stake and for every unit increase you will win that stake. E.g. if you bet 10 on a team to have a goal margin of at least 2 and they actually end up with a margin of 4, then you will win a 2 unit increase multiplied by your stake., which equals 20. You can read more about football spread betting here.

Types of football bets

The most popular type of football bet is the 1X2 bet, where you bet on either team to win or for a draw. This type of bet attracts the most bettors because it is the most obvious thing to bet on and it has few outcomes. However there are many more different bets on football that you can place. These include the scoreline of the game, which players will score and total goals. These can often be more profitable if you win because they are less likely to happen and so will have larger odds. Over the last few years in-play betting has been introduced where you can actually bet as football matches are taking place. Bettors enjoy this because they can use their skill and knowledge to greater effect to predict outcomes from seeing the team’s performance on the day.

Big Bets

For some bettors, placing big bets can be a problem because a lot of bookmakers and sportsbooks don’t allow them. This type of high roller betting can be risky for the bookmakers, so it can be difficult to find one that accepts big bets. You are much more likely to see a casino that will let you bet big, but where do you go if you are into sports betting? The bookmaker with the largest limits on the Internet is CanBet.

CanBet

Canbet was established in 1995 and since then it has grown to serve a global market. They offer a top betting service with constantly high odds and hundreds of markets. They stand out though for offering the biggest betting limits by a sportsbook. The actual size of the bets you can make are not displayed because they are decided on bet-by-bet basis. You can usually bet several thousand per market though.

When you join CanBet you will also be given a £25 free bet after your first bet of £25. Join here today.

History of the Barclays Premiership

Since its creation in 1992 there have been over 16,000 goals. That is roughly 1,000 per season! Brian Deane scored the first ever goal when he played for Sheffield United, which helped them beat the future champions Manchester United 2-1.

All time Premiership top scorers

The all time premier league scorer is Alan Shearer with 260 goals. He is the only player so far to reach the 200 goal mark. The following table shows the current top 10 all time goal scorers. The table is correct as of September 2009.

Rank

Player

Goals

1.

Alan Shearer

260

2.

Andrew Cole

187

3.

Thierry Henry

174

4.

Robbie Fowler

163

9.

Dwight Yorke

123

10.

Robbie Keane

120

As you can see, 6 of the 10 are English players! However all, but 2 players in the list are either retired or no longer play in the Premiership. Thierry Henry is one of the most recent premiership top scorers who left Arsenal in 2007 to join Barcelona.

Golden boot winners

The Premiership top scorer, otherwise known as the golden boot winner is the player with the most goals at the end of the season. This is a very popular market for punters to bet on because it keeps it’s excitement throughout the whole season. The following table lists the top Premiership scorers since the league began.

Season

Player

Goals

92/93

Teddy Sheringham

22

93/94

Andrew Cole

25

97/98

Dion Dublin

18

98/99

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

18

99/00

Kevin Phillips

30

00/01

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

23

01/02

Thierry Henry

24

02/03

Ruud van Nistelrooy

25

03/04

Thierry Henry

30

04/05

Thierry Henry

25

05/06

Thierry Henry

27

06/07

Didier Drogba

20

07/08

Cristiano Ronaldo

30

08/09

Nicolas Anelka

19

The trend shows a couple of years where high premiership top goal scorer totals were met. These are often followed by a much lower golden boot tally in subsequent years. Thierry Henry has won the award the most times, which is 4. The highest total in a season is currently jointly held by Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole, who both managed to reach 34 goals.

You can get a lot more statistics here >

Premiership top scorer betting

Top scorer (golden boot) betting on the premier league is one of the top season long bets. When making bets like this it is important to do your research. A lot can happen over the season. First of all check the players previous goal scoring record. Were they injured in a season when they reached a high total?…Could they get more this year? For example, Fernando Torres. He scored 24 goals in his first season for Liverpool, but was then injured so didn’t score so many the next season.

Is the player really good, but also really injury prone? Lots of injuries may stop a player reaching a high total over a single season, even if they do have a high goal per game ratio.

It is also important to see if the player will be missing due to other commitments. For example, many African players in the Premier League attend the African Cup of Nations. They can be missing for over a month because of this tournament, and you never know, they could pick up an injury while they are there as well.

If the player you want to bet on is considered quite likely to score a lot of goals, then you are not going to get very good odds on it. The best thing to do is to wait for the season to start and bet after a few games. It can sometimes take a player a few games to find form, or another player may get a hattrick in their first game. These things will make the odds fluctuate and you could get a better deal.

Another option is football spread betting. Instead of picking the player who you think will score the most goals. You can pick any player and say whether they will score over or under the amount of goals the spread company think they will score.

The Premier League

The English Premier league, commonly know as the Barclays Premiership is massively popular with football bettors. The appeal is due to the excitement of the game and the top footballers than play in it. 20 teams play in the league, each playing 38 games per season. Over the season there are a total of 380 games, so lots of opportunities for betting.

History of the Premier League

The Premier League formed in 1992 to take advantage of a lucrative television rights deal and compete with top teams across Europe. Since then it has become the most watched sports league in the world. There were originally 22 clubs, but due to FIFA requests to reduce the number of games played in each domestic league, the number of clubs was reduced to 20 in 1995.

Out of the 43 clubs that have played in the Premiership, only four have won the title. These are Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers. Blackburn being the only side outside the so called “big four” teams that have managed title success.

Out of all the teams, Manchester United have had the most success in the league, with 11 titles up to the 2009/2010 season. Arsenal have won it 3 times and Chelsea, 2. Blackburn have a single title from the 1994/1995 season.

Premier League Records

There are many records in the premiership, but here are some of the most notable.

Arsenal are the only team in the league to go a whole season without losing a single game. This was in the 2003/2004 season, and in all the team went 49 games without losing any matches.

In the 2004/2005 season Chelsea set the record for the highest points total ever in the premier league of 95. Also in this season they set a record of 25 clean sheets.

The first goal of the league was scored by Sheffield United’s Brian Deane against Manchester Untied.

Alan Shearer holds the overall top scorer title of 260 goals during his playing career.

The big four

Due to their dominance in the league, 4 teams in the Premiership have been labelled the “big four”. These are Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. Liverpool being the only one of the big four, not to win a single title. Because of the financial benefits these teams receive for doing well, it has distanced them from the rest of the league.

Premier league betting

If you want to make a premier league bet, then there are so many options for you. You can make premier league bets on countless markets over the 380 game season. The most popular bets of course are match outrights or 1 X 2 betting, where you bet on either team to win or a draw. Other popular bets are anytime goalscorer, first goalscorer and correct score bets.

The other popular markets are the season long bets, where you can bet on who will win the league, who will be the top scorer and who will be relegated, to name a few.

Latest Premiership table

This season’s current Premiership table standings.

Premier League betting tips

If you are going to place bets on the premiership and are serious about winning money, then the best thing you can do is to keep up to date with stats and results and try and predicts outcomes from them. Take into account team form and rivalries between teams in close proximity. Also consider placing premier league bets by different means. Football spread betting has become popular recently and it can be a great way to make more profit.
