Arsenal make the long journey to St James’ Park on Saturday to take on Newcastle as the Premier League season gets underway, writes Pete South.

Both sides have suffered controversial drawn out sagas this summer which threaten to engulf the clubs.

They will be desperate to get the action underway in order to switch attention back to on-the-field matters.

Cesc Fabregas’s will-he-won’t-he flirtation with Barcelona and Samir Nasri’s similar indecision over his future at the club undermining Arsenal’s efforts to end their 6 year trophy drought, while Newcastle are willing to release Joey Barton on a free transfer after the out-spoken midfielder went into overdrive on Twitter.

Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh revealed on Wednesday that he expected both Fabregas and Nasri to leave before the start of the season, which would leave Arsene Wenger with a considerable headache as he looks to replace two of his best players.

Arsenal will be able to call upon the services of new signing Gervihno, who has impressed in pre-season so far, but will be without full back Gael Clichy after the Frenchman completed his £7 million move to Manchester City earlier this summer.

Newcastle have had an even busier summer than their opponents on Saturday, bringing in no less than six French-speaking players. Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye, Sylvain Marveaux and Mehdi Abeid have all joined the club, while Gabriel Obertan completed his move from Manchester United earlier this week.

But by far the biggest news to come out of the club has been the revelation that Barton, the club’s player of the season last time round, would be free to leave on a free transfer despite a year remaining on his contract.

Barton, along with Jose Enrique, both incurred the wrath of manager Alan Pardew for airing their displeasure at goings on behind the scenes on Twitter, and while Enrique looks close to a move to Liverpool, Barton’s future remains uncertain.

The memories of the two team’s classic encounter last season will prompt hopes of a similar goal-laden game this time round.

Newcastle recovered from 4-1 down to salvage a dramatic draw, and in the process inflicting a huge psychological blow on Wenger’s side, something they will be keen to address on Saturday.

Bet365 gave Arsenal at evens despite conceding home advantage, while Newcastle, who have been tipped for relegation following their tumultuous summer, are 3/1 with Paddy Power to pick up all three points.

The traditional season curtain raiser gets underway this weekend as FA Cup winners Manchester City go up against Premier League Champions Manchester United.

It should be a fiercely fought Community Shield battle between the two cross-city rivals.

The tough talking has already begun as City midfielder Yaya Toure laid down the gauntlet for their rivals by insisting they are no longer the noisy neighbours United boss Sir Alex Ferguson suggested last year but genuine title contenders, and it is hard to argue with the Ivorian following the Blues’ flexing of their financial muscle this summer.

Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero arrived at Eastlands in a deal believed to be worth around £38 million earlier this month, while there is expected be plenty more arrivals before the transfer window closes in August.

However it hasn’t all been plain-sailing as both Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli have admitted they are unhappy in Manchester with the Argentinian adamant he will leave the city this season, while Balotelli admits a move back to Italy could be on the cards sooner rather than later.

Manchester United haven’t been exactly quiet this summer as they go about replacing players who have retired, bolstering key areas and building for the future in one fell swoop.

David De Gea, Ashley Young, and Phil Jones have all arrived at Old Trafford this summer with Ferguson seemingly finding the value he has been searching for in the transfer window for the past few years.

Both team’s respective transfer activity has helped them be installed as amongst the favourites for the league title, with Man Utd edging the betting thanks to their experience, while this season may be a campaign to soon for Roberto Mancini’s men.

United are best placed with Bet365 and Bluesq at 13/10 for the game with City are 2/1 to with Sportingbet with the draw placed at 9/4.

Both Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez are expected to start up front for United, with the Mexican international the favourite for both the top scorer accolade next season as well as the first scorer this weekend, while Aguero is also expected to feature in the match, alongside controversial Italian striker Mario Balotelli, who also features prominently in the first to score list.

These two teams enjoyed some spectacular battles last year, with United coming out on top in the league while City gained revenge in the FA Cup semi-final on their way to Wembley last season.

United are leading the way in terms of Community Shield wins having won 18 times while City have held the shield aloft only three times, with their last victory coming in 1972.

Paddy Power is Irelands most successful bookmaker, operating retail and telephone betting as well as their online service. They currently offer a free bet of £20 when you bet £10. Possibly one of the best returns in the industry.

Their site is much more than just a sportsbook, casino and poker room. Their site is always full of great odds and special offers as well as humourous and witty advertising. This is what draws in so many customers each year. They have a customer-centric approach to their business and it really works!

Their most famous special offer are their Money-Back Specials. These give you a chance to get your money back on your bet if it loses. For example they often feature money back specials where if the last goal in a particular football match is a header and you lose your bet, then you are refunded. They famously refunded £1.2 million in bets after the 2008 Champions League final. They pledged to refund losing bets if Cristiano Ronaldo scored during normal time and of course, he then did.

Because of their many offers, it is often said that bets at Paddy Power have 3 outcomes: Win, Lose or Money Back.
