The biggest game in European club football takes place on Saturday when the Champions League final in contested by Chelsea and Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
Not many people had been tipping these two sides to make the final when they went up against Real Madrid and Barcelona in their respective semi-finals. However, they both deserved their place after putting in incredible performances to beat the two Spanish giants.
Chelsea have had a fantastic journey in the Champions League, which included overturning a 3-1 deficit against Napoli in the quarter-final.
The Blues then went to the Nou Camp in the semi-final second leg with a 1-0 lead and were simply incredible that evening. They managed to draw 2-2 on the night after spending the majority of the game with ten men.
Roberto Di Matteo’s side finished in sixth position in the Premier League so their only chance of Champions League football next campaign is if they win the competition this weekend.
With one trophy already under their belt after an FA Cup victory earlier in the month, it could prove to be one of the most successful seasons in the clubs history.
Di Matteo’s men go into this match on a run of just two defeats in 15 games.
As for Bayern Munich, they have remained unbeaten on home soil in the tournament so far, so will be full of confidence as the final is being played on their own turf.
Bayern beat La Liga champions Real Madrid in their semi-final. They certainly did it the German way though, which is of course on penalties.
Josef Heynckes’ men will be looking to take some silverware here after a disappointing campaign domestically. They missed out on the Bundesliga title to Borussia Dortumund.
Dortmund then thrashed them 5-2 in the DFB Pokal final, a result which would have hurt everyone at the club.
Heynkes will know that a win here is the only option to save face for a poor season by their usual high standards.
