Wales v England

Posted on 21 March 2011 by trooney in Football, headline

All eyes will be on the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff this weekend when Wales take on England in the latest European Championship qualifying match.

The Group G contest between the home nations is likely to be an intense affair.

There will be 80,000 Welshman desperate to watch their team defeat England and upset their qualification chances.

Wales are yet to record a point so far, with defeats to Montenegro, Bulgaria and Switzerland. They will look to get things back on track in Gary Speed’s first competitive game as manager though.

Their qualifying campaign is in danger of dying a death before it has even begun and victory against England would be a major boost to their confidence, let alone their chances of mounting a challenge to qualify for Euro 2012.

England will no doubt be favourites though as they look to get back to winning ways after a disappointing 0-0 draw with Montenegro at Wembley in their last qualification match.

Fabio Capello’s men now sit three points behind the team that held them in this game, although they have played a game less.

With regards to team news, Gary Speed could unleash Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Craig Bellamy on England in an attacking 4-3-3 formation. Each has had their injury problems of late, but Speed wants them involved in what is a big game for the Welsh.

As for England, John Terry is set to recover from a knock picked up against Manchester City yesterday to lead his country once more.

The Chelsea skipper was stripped of the captaincy after allegations regarding his private life, but will once again wear the armband in the absence of Rio Ferdinand.

There are some inexperienced names in the England squad too, with Kyle Walker, Matthew Jarvis and Andy Carroll included in the party for the games against Wales and Ghana.

This will be a tough test for England, but they should have enough to shine through. An early goal would do them wonders to silence the crowd, but they must focus throughout.

Not only would defeat hurt national pride, but it would disrupt England’s qualification campaign and undo the good work done in the first two games.

With the World Cup debacle still fresh in the memory, this is the last thing England need.

It’s going to be a fascinating contest.
