Arsenal v Marseille

Posted on 31 October 2011 by trooney in Football, headline

Arsenal will be hoping to continue their good recent form when they take on Marseille in the Champions League tomorrow night.

The Gunners have recovered from a poor start to the campaign with eight wins in their last nine games across all competitions.

They were also at their attacking best against Chelsea at the weekend as they ran out 5-3 winners after a thriller at Stamford Bridge.

Arsene Wenger will now be hoping that they can take this win into the rest of the campaign positively, starting with the Champions League tie against Marseille this evening.

The two teams met in France a couple of weeks ago of course, with Aaron Ramsey scoring a 92nd minute winner for the Gunners.

This victory meant that Arsenal top Group F going into tomorrow night’s fixture, one point ahead of 2nd placed Marseille.

Therefore, when the two teams meet at the Emirates, there is a lot at stake. Whoever wins is in an excellent position to win the group.

Arsenal in particular will be in a dominant position should they move four points clear with two group games remaining.

They will want to make sure they improve at the back if they are to do this though. They were clearly shaky against Chelsea and their forward line won’t always be there to make up for this.

Having said that, Robin Van Persie is in inspired form right now following his hat-trick at the weekend.

The Dutchman has now scored 12 goals in all competitions this year, including seven in his last four games.

The new Arsenal skipper has certainly been leading from the front and will look to do so again tomorrow evening against Marseille.

As for the French side, they too have had their struggles domestically. They currently sit 9th in the table, although they have gone six games without defeat in the league.

It is certainly set to be a competitive contest.

Match odds

Home advantage helps Arsenal be favourites to win the game though. They are 1.62 (8/13) to get the three points, while BoyleSports has Marseille down at 6.00 (5/1) to pick up an away win.

The draw is then available at 4.00 (3/1) with SkyBet.

Correct score

In terms of a correct score, you can back the Gunners to stroll to a 3-0 victory at 15.00 (14/1) with 888Sport, while a less convincing win of 1-0 is available at around 7.00 (6/1) with most bookies.

If you fancy Marseille to get a goal but lost the game, you can back 2-1 to Arsenal at 9.00 (8/1) with Ladbrokes.

Then, if you think the French side can get something, a 1-1 draw can be backed at 7.00 (6/1), while an entertaining 3-2 away win is available at 51.00 (50/1) with SkyBet.

First goalscorer

It will come as no surprise that the in-form Robin Van Persie is the favourite to score first in this one. He is 5.00 (4/1) with BoyleSports, closely followed by Gervinho at 7.00 (6/1).

For Marseille, their best chance of scoring first is Loic Remy. The French striker can be backed at 9.00 (8/1) to open the scoring in this one.
