Wimbledon 2010 quarter-final selections

Posted on 30 June 2010 by admin in Tennis

While the England football team were grabbing all the headlines with their failed World Cup campaign, Andy Murray was quietly playing his way into the Wimbledon quarter-finals. Tomorrow he will play Jo Wilfried Tsonga from France and hopefully restore some of the British pride!

The last 4 meetings between Murray and Tsonga have ended 2 for Murray and 2 for Tsonga, so things have been pretty even in the past. The prize this time is a place in the semi-final against either Robin Soderling or Rafael Nadal, both very difficult opponents. Murray hasn’t yet hit top gear this year, but he will have to against Tsonga who has the ability to outclass anyone with his explosive style.

The biggest threat from Tsonga is on the serve. His first serve has been key to his success at Wimbledon this year and he plays for short returns so he can approach the net. Murray will have to start quickly in this match as Tsonga is a stronger player than Sam Querrey who Murray played in the last round. His key area to improve is his serve and if he does he will have a good chance of progressing. Murray has won 5 of his last 6 matches when playing big servers, so he has a good chance here.

Also, back Jo Wilfried Tsonga Most aces @ 1.7

Robin Soderling and Rafael Nadal meet again after the French Open final for the second time in their Wimbledon careers. Nadal has won 5 out of the 7 clashes between him and Soderling which is a good start. Many people will remember Soderling beating Nadal in the 2009 French Open, but they mustn’t forget that 2009 was a bad injury year for Nadal and was far from his best. Nadal missed Wimbledon altogether in 2009 due to that injury and so his last game was the 2008 win in the Final over Roger Federer. This means that Nadal hasn’t lost a Wimbledon match since 2007 when he was beaten by Federer in the epic 2007 final.

Soderling has improved a lot recently on Clay and hard courts, but grass is still a surface he has trouble on. Playing Nadal who is one of the best returners in the game is going to be a mighty challenge.

Tip: Back Rafael Nadal @ 1.66 to Win match
