Top goalscoring team in the World Cup

Posted on 16 June 2010 by admin in Football, International Football

This betting market is an interesting one because it has shown a strong pattern since the 1970 World Cup. Some might try and predict big goalscoring teams by the group they are in – whether they have a hard or easy group and the potential for a lot of goals against “small” teams.

However the statistics show that this isn’t the way to do it. Since the 1970 tournament, the 10 teams that have finished as top goalscorers of the World Cup have all got to at least the semi-finals. On 6 of those occasions the winner has been top scorer.

So you have to look for a team that can score, but also has the potential to progress through the tournament. It comes down to the simple fact of – more games equals more goals. The eventual winner has to have the potential to get 15+ goals in their road to the final. Even if they go out in the semi-finals there is the third place play-off to grab more goals, and this has previously shown to be high scoring.

It’s not a surprise that Spain are current leaders in this market at around 5.0 due to their strength in front of goal that was proved in qualifying (28 goals in 10 games). The other favourites are of course Brazil, who are tipped to get into the final, so could produce a lot of goals.

England and Chile scored a lot of goals in qualifying, but their teams don’t seem good enough to progress as far as Spain and Brazil. However Germany are another favourite as they always seem to produce in the big tournaments. Uruguay, if they manage to get off to a good start also have big potential. In Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez they have two strikers who get 30+ goals per season for their club teams. If they manage to get far enough, then they could be a good bet.

If you are not convinced by any of these teams then there is another option for you. Excluding the following teams – Spain, Brazil, England, Argentina, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, France, Ivory Coast, Portugal, Chile, Ghana, USA, Serbia, Paraguay, South Africa, Australia, Mexico and Greece, Betfair are offering “Any Other Team” to be topscorers at 36.0. See our World Cup betting odds to see more bets.

Tip: If you have backed Brazil to win the World Cup then go for Spain to be top goalscorers (5.0) and you could be in for a double win! See our football betting tips page for great bets that are often utilized to make profit.
