With five of the top 10 goalscorers in the 2009/2010 Premiership season being English it looked like a good sign for England in the World Cup. However that was not the case as they crashed out in their first knock-out game. This doesn’t mean that the Premiership lacks English goalscorers though. There is still plenty of talent and the English Top Goalscorer market at Betfair is the place to be if you are in to football betting.
It’s pretty hard for the English players to compete with all the international talent in the Premier League, so if you think one of the English players will do well, then the Top English Goalscorer market should be the first place you look.
The favourite as probably expected is Wayne Rooney, last year’s golden boot runner up. Rooney showed his best form last season without Ronaldo. Can he do it again? Maybe, but this season is likely to see more of a team effort from United. Their downfall last season was that too much was left to their star man Rooney. This season United have a few more options up front, so the goals could be spread around a bit more. Rooney is still a good bet though and is priced at 2.82.
Darren Bent achieved his best year in the Premiership last season with 24 goals. He is priced at 7.6 but might be hard pushed to achieve the same feat again with Sunderland, although he will surely be aiming to reach the same total again this year. 24 goals is more than a respectable total and if he manages it again, Bent could well be the top English goalscorer.
After a slow start, Frank Lampard broke his Premiership record last season with 22 goals. He is known for his scoring abilities from midfield, but Lampard doesn’t usually score more than the low teens in a season. If it wasn’t for the impressive totals of Rooney and Bent last season, Lampard would have easily been the top English goalscorer. Can he do it again?…of course! In a Chelsea team full of talent it’s not hard seeing a similar score in the 2010/2011 season. Back Frank at 9.0
Jermain Defoe matured last season. In previous years he has played a bit-part role in his teams. However in the 2009/10 season manager Harry Redknapp showed his faith and got a lot out of the striker that he brought back from Portsmouth. Defoe is 6.8 to be top English goalscorer this season. He is surely one of the favourites and the odds are good too.
Other options for this market include Steven Gerrard (11.5), Peter Crouch (15.0), Gabriel Agbonlahor (24) and Michael Owen (32.0).
